Hunting Methods
Depending on your weapon and time of the season, hunt methods may include using a 4x4 vehicle for access, glassing logging cuts and hillsides, watching water holes or feeding areas, calling, and tracking.
Hunt Areas
Most of the moose hunting areas are in northeast Washington north of Spokane. Elevations vary from 2500 to 6000 feet, the terrain is rolling mountains and drainages with dense evergreen forests and logging cuts.
Trophy Quality
Most bulls taken have had 38" to 48" wide antlers. Numerous record class bulls have been taken in northeast Washington.

10. DIY Salmon Fishing Trip - Alaska
For the self-sufficient angler that wants to spend a week on the world-famous Naknek, exploring this angling paradise on his own.
Package Includes:
Private Riverfront Cabin
All Food in our Comfortable Dining Room
Transportation to and from the King Salmon Airport
Boat and Motor with Gas
Early Season – June & July
Smolting Rainbows on the Naknek:
8 weight with floating line for main river Rainbows, and shooting line or zip line for sockeye. If you would like to bring a sink tip for streamers bring it but make sure you have a floating line first.
The best rainbow fishing is close to camp. The rainbows concentrate on salmon smolt and leeches migrating downstream to the ocean. The best offerings include large rabbit strip and marabou leeches in black, olive, and dark brown. NOT egg-sucking leeches. Minnow imitations are also deadly in small to medium sizes.
Rainbows at Brooks: Brooks is flies only. In June, July, and early August, rainbows will eagerly take mice, dead drifted small dries, sculpins and leeches.
Recommended Tackle: an 8 ½ to 10-foot fly rod for a 5-6 weight line. The WF floater is the most popular choice, although sink-tips (130 grain to 200 grain) will work as well. 3x to 5x tippets.
Grayling at Idavain: This fishing starts out with a 1-mile hike to the better fishing grounds. Grayling are best fished with light tackle. I would use a 4 or 5-weight fly rod with a floating line. #12 and #14 Adams, caddis, and stoneflies (dry), small beadhead nymphs, leeches, woolybuggers, and deer hair mice will all work here.
Kings: These begin showing up in mid-June, building throughout the month. Most of the fishing is down in the lower Naknek, where the tide is important and the water is deep. Treble hooks are legal. By late July, they will begin moving into the rapids to prepare for spawning. Single Hook Only.
Recommended Tackle: We have a lot of heavy rods and reels – spinning, revolving spool, and fly – that guests can use.
If you want to bring some, I would recommend a 7-foot spinning rod with a 30-pound braid for casting, a 9-foot spinning or casting rod with a 30-pound braid for back-trolling, and a 9’ for a 10 or 11 weight for flyfishing. The fly reel should employ a 400 – 600 grain sink tip line.
Large streamers in bright colors with lots of action work very well (salmon snakes, rabbit leeches, popsicles, etc.) Plugs are very popular locally, with large Kwikfish being #1, followed closely by Wiggle Warts and Hot-N-Tots in Chart, Fire Tiger, Hot Pink, silver/green and Orange. Large spinners are especially deadly, with blades in sizes 5 – 8 in silver, pink, chart, and orange.
Sockeye: Chrome sockeye begin their trip from the ocean around June 20th. This migration continues until late July (timing varies, of course, depending on the weather). Until the spawn in mid-August, sockeye will hold in slow pools and side channels. They are usually turning red by early August.
Recommended Tackle: A 6-8 weight fly rod in 9’ to 11’ lengths with a Climax Zip Line is by far the best choice. A floating line with either a strike indicator or a few split shots will also work well.
Late Season – August & September
Rainbows on the Naknek:
The best rainbow fishing is close to camp and in the rapids. The rainbows will still take salmon smolt and leeches migrating downstream to the ocean, but by far the biggest food source is salmon eggs. Sockeye eggs are 6mm, silvers and pinks are 8mm and kings are 10mm. Sometimes, oversize imitations work better. I like trout beads mottled beads in orange, dark roe, and pinks in sizes 6mm – 12mm. Don’t forget #8 and #10 short shank hooks and toothpicks (or the clear plastic pegs). For leeches, I like articulated and bunny strip versions without eggs in front in black, olive, purple, and flesh colors. Wool head sculpins also work well. Late in the season, flesh flies might be needed.
Recommended Tackle: a light spinning rod in the 9 ½ – 11 ½ range, loaded with 4 – 8 pounds mono a 9 ½ to 11 ½ fly rod in the 6 to 8 wt range. I would want to have a 200 or 300-grain sink tip, a WF floating line, and a Climax Zipline (or equivalent shooting line). 2x – 4 x fluorocarbon tippets.
a center pin rig can be deadly for this fishing.Rainbows at Brooks: Brooks is flies only. In early August, rainbows will eagerly take mice, dead drifted small dries, sculpins, and leeches. By mid to late August, the sockeye spawning kicks in, and 6mm – 8mm plastic beads are king.
Recommended Tackle: an 8 ½ to 10-foot fly rod for a 5-6 weight line. The WF floater is the most popular choice. I also love the zip line for this fishing. 3x to 5x tippets.
Margot Creek:
This is some of the best arctic char/ dolly varden fishing around, along with a decent population of rainbows. The stream is full of sockeye spawning by mid-August., so beads are a great bet here, with or without a fly following behind. All the same, the patterns listed for Brooks work well here as well. If the water is discolored, 10 and 12-mm beads are deadly. The rest of the time, 6mm and 8mm work best.
Pricing is per person based on double occupancy.

12. DIY Bear Hunt
5 Day DIY Map Hunt
We hunt Merriam's Turkey in Stevens County which has the most turkeys of any county in Washington and one of the highest turkey densities in the U.S. An amazing 74% of all turkeys taken in the state of Washington are taken here in NE Washington. Our guides are Washington’s most successful turkey guides, with more successful turkey hunts to their credit than any other Washington turkey guides — as many as 101 birds in one season.
Hundreds of successful bear hunts confirm that we are one of the most experienced and successful bear hunting outfitters in the business. These are spot and stalk bear hunts using the advantage of natural food sources and our extensive knowledge of bear habits. Spring permits are a draw, but for hunters who do draw them, your odds of success are three to four times higher if you hunt with us.
Hunt Methods
There's nothing better than calling in a big gobbler. Another reason for our high success rate is that we pattern turkey movements. We get a lot of birds by using blinds at feeding areas and strutting zones. By knowing these areas well our hunters consistently kill birds all season.
One of the most effective bear hunting methods is sitting and glassing mountain berry patches for feeding bear. Sometimes bear are spotted at close range so you can shoot when the bear is first spotted and other times bear are spotted at long distance and hunters try to stalk closer. It really gets exciting when a bear is so close in the brush that you can hear him eating but you have to wait for a clear shot. Bow hunters usually watch game trails or waterholes for close range shots.
If the thought of sitting over a bear bait pile doesn't sound appealing and you want to feel like you really earned your bear, this might be the right hunt, give us a call. This bear hunt is perfect for the bear hunter looking for a truly challenging bear hunt. Once you've hunted bear this way, you will likely want to do it again.
Hunting Areas
Private Ranches: We lease numerous properties. The guides know these properties and the turkey movements extremely well. The most successful hunting method is using blinds at feeding and strutting areas.
Mountain Hunts: Are done in mountain hotspots where there are good numbers of birds. The most successful hunting method is calling, hunters cover ground to locate toms that will call. These hunts require more hiking and are best suited to hunters wanting to cover ground and call.
Trophy Quality
Merriam’s have fantastic color that compliments any trophy room. Mature toms weigh 15 to 20 pounds with 7" to 10" beards, and ½ to 1½-inch spurs. The largest we've taken weighed 24 pounds, had 11 1/4" beard and 1 7/8" spurs. Bearded hens are fairly common and may be taken for a mount, beards on hens have measured from 3 to 8 inches.
Hides are best in the spring or after chilly fall nights cause the fur to thicken in September. Roughly 50% of bear taken are off color, so there's a reasonable chance of taking a brown, blonde, or cinnamon color phase bear. There is an option to hunt a second bear after you get your first bear. Most bear weigh from 100 to 300 pounds and measure from 5 to 6 feet. Some of the larger bear have weighed from 300 to 550 pounds and measured 6 to 7 feet. Fall bear have about the same size skin as spring bear but are about 50% heavier than spring bear that have recently come out of hibernation.
Shot Opportunity
Guided hunt shot opportunity is over 300%, success for two birds is usually 150% to 200%, unguided hunters are about half as successful. Shot distances vary from 5 to 40+ yards. Pattern your shotgun on Turkey Targets in advance to determine your maximum effective range.
Shot opportunity on the fall guided bear hunts usually runs 50% to 80% but we've had years with 100% opportunity. Our guided spring bear hunts have been 80% to 100% most years. Unguided hunters average about half the success of guided hunts. Shooting distances vary from 10 yards to 200+ yards. Sight your rifle dead on at 200 yards. Bow hunters should practice for 10 to 50 yard shots.
Seasons & Best Time: Turkey
Spring is good until about May 20. The entire fall season is excellent.
Youth Season: Open April 7-8 for two bearded turkeys.
Spring General: Open April 15 to May 31 for two bearded turkeys.
Fall Season: Sept 1 to Dec 31 for two either-Sex & two beardless.
Late Fall Turkey: Late November and early Dec for one either-sex.
Seasons: Bear
Fall: Opens August 1st and is best in August and September.
Spring: Open from mid-April to mid-June. Permits are a draw. May and June are the best months in this season.
Accommodations
Lodge & Cabins: Meals are served in the lodge dining area and there's a pool table in the den. The cabins each sleep 2 to 4 hunters and there are indoor bathrooms. There's a lighted game cleaning area with water and a freezer for meat. Groups of up to 12 can be accommodated.
Motel “Town Hunts”: There are motels only three miles away in town if you would prefer to stay in town at your own expense.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR ARKANSAS SELF GUIDED PIT LEASE HUNT
This is a NON-GUIDED daily self-guided pit lease.
You will meet one of our guides the afternoon before the morning of your hunt at a predetermined location near the hunting grounds. All hunters in your group will be required to sign a release of liability waiver prior to hunting. Your guide will escort you to the hunting pit or drop you a Google Maps pin so you can go out the afternoon before to scout it out.
Decoys will not be provided. We recommend bringing anywhere from 50 to 150 decoys for your spread. You are welcome to leave decoys out overnight in your field however we are not responsible for any equipment or decoys left in the fields overnight.
We also recommend bringing an ATV or side-by-side to get to and from the pits. The pit will be yours only for the # of days you have it leased.
These are 16 foot 6 man pits with either roll-top lids or flip-top lids and a dog box. 6 person max. If you have more than 6 people in your group, contact Mike (the Host) to talk about other options or larger pits for your group.
Fields will be flooded in 3″ up to 15″ of water depending on location. We cannot control weather conditions and at times prolonged subfreezing temperatures will cause the flooded fields to ice over. You are welcome to break ice, run ice eaters or mallard machines to keep a hole open or hunt full body decoys over the ice. We do not offer refunds due to subfreezing weather conditions.
Our pits that we lease kill 400-600 birds on average per year. These are proven killing holes with a lot of success. Depending on crop rotation, the fields will be in flooded rice, beans, milo or millet. We do not allow hunting after 3 PM CDT on any of our farms.
We do not allow hunting after 3 PM CDT on any of our farms. However, if weather conditions make it unsafe for a morning hunt, we may allow you to hunt the afternoon until sunset. You must request permission before hunting after 3 PM CDT. Many of our farms are roosting holes and will roost anywhere from 5K to 10K birds every evening. We do this to ensure quality shooting throughout the season.
We hunt our fields on a rotation. When you arrive your field will have had at least 3-4 days or more rest. As any knowledgeable duck hunter knows, if you shoot the roost in the evening, the birds that are using your farm will leave and NOT come back! All shooting must end by 3 PM CDT unless prior approval was grated due to unsafe hunting conditions.
You are welcome to bring your retrieving dog and any Motion Decoys you would like. Most of our pits are within a 300-800 yard walk from a gravel road.
