Spring Turkey Hunting in Oregon
Because of Oregon’s incredibly fast-growing turkey population, Oregon's six-week spring turkey season is among the most liberal in the United States. It provides hunters the opportunity to take up to three gobblers during the spring season. The spring turkey hunting season runs April 15 – May 31 each year, giving hunters an opportunity to experience an incredible mating season with unpressured and vocal birds. Oregon's youth season starts the weekend prior and allows two days for youth only.
Umpqua Valley in Southwestern Oregon is said to have the largest population of Rio Grande Turkeys this side of the Mississippi and the Southern and Mid-Willamette Valley is following close behind. We invite you to hunt with us, to see for yourself, how incredible Oregon turkey hunting is.
Spring Bear Hunt
We offer Spring Bear hunts in Oregon's highest density black bear units. These hunts give you a great opportunity on successfully harvesting a record book bear. We hunt several units in the state for bears but Spring bear hunts are through a controlled draw only. Oregon limits non-residents to only 3% of the tags available in the draw. SW Oregon 700 series makes up several different GMU's with the highest bear densities. It is situated between Interstate 5 and the Southern Oregon Coast in the Siskiyou and Coast Range mountains. Because of the heavy bear population, they issue 4400 spring bear tags each year.
There are tons of bears, tons of country and this is a guaranteed draw for non-resiteds. Spring season runs from April - May. If you are looking for a great Spring bear hunt, we can produce great opportunities, Although the most common color we see is black, it is not unusual for bears in this region to have some color phase characteristics, including brown, cinnamon, and blonde. All of our bear hunts are very exciting and 100% fair chase.
Oregon Turkey Hunting Outfitters
Our dedicated team of local guides grew up hunting the Valley in Oregon. They are excellent archery and gun hunters and experts at calling birds in close. We welcome hunters of all ages, using both archery equipment and shotguns as well as those with any physical disabilities to experience some of the finest turkey hunting around.
Oregon Turkey Habitat and Hunting Methods
Turkey habitat varies greatly throughout the Umpqua and Willamette Valley in Oregon. Much of our turkey hunting takes place on the edge of the valley where farmlands mix with forest lands. This gives us exceptional habitat in all of our turkey hunting areas. In most scenarios you can expect rolling hills covered with tall oak and fir trees, scattered open meadows and thick brushy hillsides and creek bottoms that mix with farmlands at the lower elevations.
Our spring turkey hunting methods will change with weather and habits as well as public vs. private land hunts. As the spring weather warms, birds will move to higher elevation and as birds move so will we. Our most common techniques include hunting from ground blinds over decoys, spot and stalk, calling and setting up near roost trees in the pre-dawn and dusk hours.
Oregon Bear Hunting Methods & Terrain
Baiting and/or Hounds are Not Legal!
Most of the time our hunting methods will be dictated by food sources and weather conditions. Our preferred for hunting bears include calling, spot and stalk and glassing feeding areas. This gives us the best opportunity to look at the bear carefully and judge it before making a decision to harvest. Good optics and a lot of time spent using them is a very important element to a successful bear hunting trip. At certain times during the spring hunts calling bears is extremely successful. Calling tends to work best on bears that we spot first but may not be able to get a good stalk on or just want to bring it close for a better shot or a bow setup. If you've ever wanted excitement, you'll get it when a bear disappears into the brush and starts charging to a call.
Most areas that we hunt spring and fall bears is very steep and brushy. Terrain and habitat vary greatly in a short distance. Depending on the location hunted expect to be surrounded by deep timbered canyons, creek drainages, swamps, and old logging clear-cuts. Many of these places are walk in only areas behind locked gates. We park and then we access the hunting areas on foot. We use old roads and trails to access as much of the area as possible and then hunt accordingly.
