Hi, I'm Jay

I've been a member since June 2020

Jay is a former professional bullfighter and gymnast, who is now a professional bass-fisherman that travels the country fishing and spreading his love for the sport! He has been able to succeed in 3 of his childhood dreams and considers himself very blessed. He plans to have a long career competing on the Bassmaster tournament trails. Along with his normal off-water duties such as sponsor promotion, product development and public appearances, Jay spends time speaking to youth fishing teams and at church events. He also participates in charity fishing tournaments. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!- Phil 4:13

Jay Brainard was raised on a farm and ranch in Enid, OK. Ranch work, baseball, football and gymnastics took up most of his time but free time was spent catching bass in a spring fed pond in his front yard. Jay’s gymnastics career included a Valeri Liukin Invitational(USA/Russia) All-Around gold medal, USGA Regional High Bar gold medal, several Oklahoma State Championship All-Around and event gold medals, one standing Oklahoma State Championship All-Around record and multiple silver and bronze Regional and State medals. After living at the Olympic Training Center for a summer Jay decided to apply his gymnastics skills to a career in rodeo. Jay began fighting bulls his sophomore year in high school, which led to a successful career in rodeo. His first year as a pro cowboy Jay set the standard for stunts over bulls by becoming the first bullfighter to successfully backflip a Mexican fighting bull without being touched (see video). The next year he was Reserve Champion in the Federation of Freestyle bullfighters competition (see video). Other accomplishments include winning the Ultimate Bullfighter freestyle bullfights in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and two top ten finishes in the International Finals Rodeo Cowboy Protection Competition, as well as articles in E-Town Magazine and Maxim Magazine in Russia. Even after his rodeo days Jay is featured in a Hesston Tractor commercial during the National Finals Rodeo on ESPN and GAC. Protecting bull riders and taming Mexican fighting bulls took Jay all over the United states from Kansas out to Carolina Beach and South Texas to Yellowstone. He wasn't just rodeoing on these long road trips. Jay fished every lake or river that he could when he wasn't in the arena. Fall of 2012 Jay decided to pursue another of his dreams and began guiding on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees. He entered every tournament he could in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas with intentions to hone his tournament skills and qualify for the Bassmaster Elite Series. His first year Jay finished 5th in the Nichols/Triton standings with a 300 boat field. Jay also had success on the Grand Lake Anglers for Christ trail, Skeeter XFL and won several Grand Lake Bassmasters events. Three years into guiding and fishing local tournaments Jay decided to make a run at the Elite Series. His first Bassmaster Open on Ross Barnett was a good one. Jay narrowly placed second to a local fisherman on a lake he had never seen until practice. That was only the beginning. He continued on to become the 2015 Bassmaster Central Opens Angler of the Year and qualify for the 2016 Bassmaster Elite Series. Jay also guides for smallmouth on Mille Lacs in Minnesota during the off-season. Mille Lacs is ranked number 1 lake in the United States by Bassmaster magazine. Jay's clients enjoy catching great numbers of smallmouth over 5 pounds with most clients catching their personal best during the trip. See Jay's Guide Service page for details!
